National Rail Conditions of Travel

Understand your rights and entitlements

The National Rail Conditions of Travel set out the minimum level of service you’re entitled to expect in relation to any train journey. They also set out your rights, as well as any restrictions to those rights. Your train company may give you more extensive rights than those set out here, but they may not give you less, unless, in the case of some types of reduced and discounted tickets, a condition specifically allows for this.

South Western Railway’s ticket office staff will give advice about tickets, and any restrictions concerning their use, on an impartial basis.

Using Oyster cards on National Rail services

If you’re using an Oyster card on National Rail services then the Oyster Conditions of Use on National Rail set out your rights and obligations, in addition to the standard National Rail Conditions of Travel. If there’s any inconsistency, the Oyster conditions of use will take priority when you’re using an Oyster card.
